I grew up in Jessup, graduated from Jessup High in 1959, and now live in State College. Ever since grade school I have known that Jessup was named after Judge William Jessup from Montrose, a coalmine owner responsible for building the Jessup branch of the Lackawanna Railroad. What I didn’t know until recently was the origin of his surname. It turns out that the name “Jessup” is derived from the name Joseph—or, more precisely, the Italian equivalent, “Giuseppe.” Jessup is simply Giuseppe Anglicized. The first Jessups were, in fact, Roman soldiers of the fourth century occupation of Britain. (One more remarkable Jessup connection to Italy.)

My name is Lou Knapp and I currently live in Williamsport, PA. My father, Lou (Basil) Knapp, grew up in Jessup (my grandmother is Anna Knapp) and we spent all of our youth participating in the festival. I have some of the best memories of my youth being in Jessup and participating in the festival with my cousins.
The website is fantastic, it's been a long time since I've been up to Jessup but after visiting the website I think my wife and I are going to come up this weekend. I've been telling her about it for twenty years and I think it would be a great way to spend the weekend.

My wife and I live in Chicago and were married in Gubbio, on September 20, 2007. We returned to Gubbio last year for our first anniversary, and always talk of returning for La Festa dei Ceri. Perhaps, in 2009, we will visit Jessop.
Glad I found this site and look forward to learning more.
We also offer prayers to those affected by the earthquake in the L'Aquila vicinity.
